Ed Gainey will be back patrolling the secondary for the Saskatchewan Roughriders next season.
The CFL team announced Thursday it has signed the 29-year-old defensive back to a one-year contract extension, keeping him with the team through the 2020 campaign. He was eligible to become a free agent Tuesday.
A product of Winston-Salem, N.C., Gainey is entering his fifth season with the Roughriders and ninth in the CFL. Gainey played in all 18 regular-season games for the Green and White in 2019, recording 56 tackles and two interceptions.
Gainey has played in 114 career CFL games and has accumulated 272 tackles, 34 special-teams tackles, one sack, 20 interceptions, four touchdowns and four forced fumbles.
He was named a CFL all-star in 2017 and 2018 and was the Roughriders’ nominee for the CFL’s most outstanding defensive player award in 2017 after a 10-interception campaign.
