Hundreds of laid-off potash workers won’t be returning to work for the start of 2020.
Nutrien spokesperson Will Tigley confirmed Wednesday the company is extending the shutdown at the Vanscoy mine by a month to the end of January.
The mine was idled last month impacting roughly 265 jobs.
“The shutdown is the extension of the announcement we made in September to manage inventory in the current global potash market conditions,” Tigley said.
Tigley did not rule out the shutdown being extended further, saying the company will monitor market conditions before making a decision on the future of the facility.
The news isn’t all bad for the potash sector.
Tigley said the company will bring back over 400 workers to restart production at the Allan and Lanigan mines on Dec. 29.
