When looking back on any year in sports in Saskatchewan, the top story always involves the Saskatchewan Roughriders — and 2019 is no different. The team won its first division title in 10 years with a first-time head coach and a quarterback who was a CFL starter for the first time in his career.
It’s remarkable really, but the Riders are what Saskatchewan’s knowledgeable fan base concerns itself with most, whether the team is taking a run at a Grey Cup, or running their season into the ground.
Outside of the Riders or the CFL, what was the biggest story in the province in 2019? The Saskatchewan-heavy St. Louis Blues had fans talking. Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors had more people talking about basketball in Saskatchewan than ever before.
For me, the top story is Bianca Andreescu’s U.S. Open win over Serena Williams. The determination of a 19-year-old, going through a storied journey for the first time, was unlike anything else this past year.
