Jamie Nye: Questionable play calling front and centre in Riders’ loss

I hope William Powell introduced himself to offensive coordinator Stephen McAdoo after yesterday’s West Final, because McAdoo clearly forgot he had one of the best runners in the CFL over the last couple of seasons.

The Roughriders had the ball within 15 yards of the Bombers goal line 12 times last night; they forgot about their running back who tied for the league lead in touchdown runs.

Out of those 12 plays, they gave Powell the ball once along the ground, with five of those plays coming from five yards and in.

Powell averaged six yards per carry in the West Final. Math may be hard, but it’s not that hard.

While the play calling may not be as egregious as the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49 not giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch near the goal line, the Riders’ play calling near the goal line was fairly criticized on the final Green Zone post-game show of the season.

It’s a season that could still be going, if Powell would have been the centre of the Riders’ goal-line offence.
