It’s voting time again for CFL reporters across the league, when we first decide who the nominees are for the teams in which we cover. From there, we get to the divisional awards, and finally in the week leading into the playoffs, we finalize who will actually win the awards during Grey Cup week in Calgary.
But I have to start with a message to those in Winnipeg: Please leave Andrew Harris off the ballot.
The optics of a CFL Player of the Year award going to someone with a positive test for performance enhancing drugs is a bad look.
I want to believe Harris’ story and I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, but that doesn’t make him innocent.
The top player out of the west this season has to be either Cody Fajardo, Reggie Begelton or Bryan Burnham.
Top Canadian for me would be Cam Judge or Kwaku Boateng.
Even if Andrew Harris ends up on the ballot for either award, I will not vote for him. I cannot vote for him.
He has possibly been the best player in the league and definitely the best Canadian, but I’ll wait to vote for him if he has a similar season next year, and all his tests come back clean.
