“Boycott Average.” It’s the wording on a chain that Saskatchewan Roughriders players have been placing around their necks after they make a big play.
There were some candidates who deserved to wear the chain in Friday’s 27-19 win over B.C. Mike Edem had two of Saskatchewan’s six sacks. I thought defensive lineman Makana Henry had his best game of the season. Cody Fajardo had a solid completion percentage, and threw a great ball to Kryan Moore for Saskatchewan’s only passing touchdown of the ball game.
However, there were parts of Saskatchewan’s game that were less than stellar against a struggling B.C. team.
Loucheiz Purifoy took a first quarter roughing-the-passer penalty. There was a Shaq Evans fumble. And there was blown coverage on a Bryan Burnham fourth-quarter touchdown.
These are mistakes that the Riders won’t be able to make against teams such as Calgary and Hamilton if they hope to win the Grey Cup.
Friday’s performance was average in many respects. With November right around the corner, a boycott of another effort like that will need to happen.
