The city’s transportation committee will take a closer look at the Saskatoon Freeway Project during it’s Monday afternoon meeting.
They’ll discuss phase one, which is expected to run north of the city between Highway 16 east past Wanuskewin Road to the South Saskatchewan River.
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways considers phase one the most challenging of the three-phase project.
It’s because of the number of existing highways, busy roads and rail lines it would need to incorporate on the route and bridge construction.
The phase one report contains information from a two-day workshop held in June.
Several stakeholders participated including the City of Saskatoon, Wanuskewin Heritage Park and Saskatoon Tribal Council.
Monday’s update will not include decisions on cost, bridge construction or exact route as that is part of on-going consultations.
Currently, the province is conducting a public engagement survey to gather feedback on the freeway as well.
The province anticipates the study on all three phases will be done in late 2021 with no timeline on construction.
The freeway bypass is expected to be a four-lane, 55-kilometre long divided highway to take traffic around Saskatoon from Highway 11 circling the city to Highway 7.
