Saskatoon police are investigating the city’s 14th homicide of 2019 after a brawl in the Massey Place neighbourhood killed a man.
Police and Medavie Health Services West were called to the 900 block of Northumberland Avenue at 2:18 a.m. Saturday.
A police media release said a “number of people” were in the parking lot where a fight had broke out and a 27-year-old man was injured.
The injured man was transported to hospital but later died of his injuries. Police are investigating the death as a homicide.
Major crimes, forensic identification and other units were called to the scene. Two persons of interest were arrested shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday when traffic officers spotted a vehicle they believe was associated in the brawl.
Around 4 p.m., police sent out a news release saying two men are charged in the man’s death.
A 26-year-old is facing a charge of second-degree murder, while the other — a 33-year-old — has been charged with being an “accessory after the fact to aggravated assault.”
The pair is expected to go before a justice of the peace to answer to their charges.
Police haven’t released the names of the accused.
The incident is under investigation.
Police are aware that many people witnessed the fight on Northumberland Avenue and are asking anyone with video recordings to contact Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300, and ask to speak to an investigator in major crimes.
This marks a new record high for Saskatoon homicides in one year. The previous high was 13 homicides set in 2018.
