This space isn’t generally saved for hometown heroes, or local celebrities. If I want people to read and listen, the subject matter needs to have a wide appeal.
My apologies for the contradiction today, but I feel the need to recognize a grassroots contributor for young people in and around Saskatoon. Words can’t describe the hole left with the passing of Kelly Bowers.
We learned that Bowers died on Tuesday. For five decades he helped coach, officiate and administrate many sports from a pee wee to a young adult level.
Kelly was a teacher by trade. If you know anything about teaching, you know that anything that happens after hours at a school is generally on the teachers’ time. Not only did Kelly Bowers go above and beyond while teaching and after, but was infectious which led to others getting involved.
He is one of those figures whose contributions simply can’t be put in to words. However, it’s not right to let this time and space go by without recognizing someone who put others ahead of himself for most of his life.
