Back-to-school this week was a harsh lesson for drivers in Saskatoon.
A two day police blitz held Tuesday and Wednesday resulted in 146 tickets for speeding in the 30 kilometre an hour school zone.
Sixteen tickets were handed out for illegal U-turns.
Staff Sargeant Patrick Barbar reminds us U-turns are illegal in many places.
“U-turns are forbidden at any intersction that’s controlled by a traffic light,” said Barbar. “Basically the only place you’re allowed to mak a legal U-turn is at an intersection that is not controlled by a traffic light.”
Barbar goes on to say you can also make a U-turn at an opening in a median as long as no sign prohibits it.
So in those school zones, Barbar reminds drivers to pay attention.
“We’d like to remind parents that after you’ve dropped off your own children, be mindful of the fact that there are other people’s children sometimes crossing the street and the U-turn does put them in jeopardy.”
