Saskatoon basketball fans are getting excited about the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s Championship Weekend.
The Saskatchewan Rattlers are hosting the 3 game tournament. They’re also putting on a street festival, complete with food trucks, a 3-on-3 minor basketball tournament and musical performances.
Fans at the festival are very proud of what the team has brought to the community. Jann Cortez thinks they’re a great influence for young athletes.
“There are lots of people who will be inspired to play basketball,” he said.
Joseph Whitford thinks the same thing.
“Kids could look up to (the Rattlers),” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity to be like ‘Hey, I could play basketball. Where do I start?'”
Other fans were happy to see what the team does for the community.
Inder Ubhi is a massive fan of all Saskatchewan sports teams. She’s glad to have the Rattlers join the ranks of the Roughriders and the Blades.
“We are so proud to have basketball. We can say this ours, this is our team,” she said.
Andrew Boryski thinks the team is a sign of progress for the city.
“It’s pretty neat to see what a growing city Saskatoon is,” he said.
The CEBL’s first semi-finals kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday, when the Rattlers take on the Edmonton Stingers. At 3:30 p.m. the Niagara River Lions are up against the Hamilton Honey Badgers.
The winners of both games face off in the championship game on Sunday at 4 p.m.
