Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) went viral in September 2018 with their lip sync rendition of the Backstreet Boys’ “I want it that way.”
In under a month, that video could be featured on CBS’ “Lip Sync to the Rescue,” an entertainment special featuring police, sheriff, fire departments and EMTs lip syncing to their chosen songs.
SPS made it to the top 30, and are the only Canadian crew to get to the finals.
Cst. Ashley McLeod is the ‘doughnut thief’ in the video, and she said being the only Canadian submission is pretty cool.
“I think it’s pretty impressive. Americans take a lot of pride in their nationality, and I think it’s pretty cool that they opened it up for us to be a part of it.”
Since they posted the video, its racked up over 3.7 million views on Facebook and nearly 500,000 on YouTube.
McLeod said the impact has been felt from their end.
“Being small-city Saskatoon in Canada, I think it’s impactful that we’re breaking down those boundaries and seen in that limelight. It’s pretty cool.”
She said the messages they’ve received from people who have been impacted by the video have been extremely positive, and it continues to be something that gets brought up in the public a lot.
“To see the type of attention it got, a lot of really positive attention. (It’s sometimes) not always what we get in the limelight.”
The voting is open now, and there’s no restriction on how many times you can vote.
The top ten, and the winner will be announced September 9 on CBS at 6:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
