A main access into downtown Saskatoon was shutdown for a gas leak Monday evening.
Around 8:30 p.m. fire crews returning from a call detected the smell of natural gas coming from the intersection of 22nd Street and Idylwyld Drive.
A four-block radius around the intersection was closed off as a precaution while SaskEnergy crews patched up the leak from an underground valve. Two nearby businesses were also checked for leaks, but nothing was found.
“We wanted to make sure we closed down enough space so that we prevented anyone from driving through a gas cloud,” said Batallion Chief Rob Hogan.
“With natural gas, of course there’s always a risk of an explosion.”
Hogan said he suspects the valve had been leaking for some time as gas was getting into the manholes which had to be vented out by city crews.
SaskEnergy gave the all-clear just before 11:30 p.m. and the area was reopened to traffic.
As of Tuesday morning, the gas company hasn’t released the cause of the leak.
