The Saskatoon Fire Department says it needs to relocate one of its fire halls to maintain response times in the city.
The fire department wants to relocate station No. 5 at Central Avenue and 105th Street to Preston and 108th Street.
The land is owned by the University of Saskatchewan, which has agreed to lease the property to the fire department pending approval from city council.
“By using Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, we’d previously identified that moving Station No. 5 to Preston Avenue north will provide a more optimal response model for the U of S and Varsity View, and at the same time, maintain responsive coverage to Sutherland, said fire chief Morgan Hackl in a media release.
Hackl adds its part of an overall plan to ensure the city is protected as it grows toward a population of 500,000.
The relocation plan would include a new building, but the same number of staff.
City Council will consider the relocation proposal at its regular meeting on Monday.
If approved, the new fire station would begin construction in the spring of 2020.
