The Stanley Cup is returning to Saskatchewan, with a little bit of Gloria this time.
Brayden Schenn of the St. Louis Blues is parading the Stanley Cup around his hometown.
Schenn will be making a brief media appearance during a private event at Fire Station No. 1, where his father, Jeff Schenn, is battalion chief. The duo will be speaking to the media for roughly 15 minutes at 4 p.m.
Schenn played his minor hockey in the Redwings zone, before playing in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League with the Saskatoon Contacts. His WHL career began with the Brandon Wheat Kings, with whom he played three seasons before playing most of his final season with the Saskatoon Blades.
He was selected fifth overall in the 2009 NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings, but wouldn’t get his chance to bring the Blues the first Stanley Cup championship in their 52-year history until he was traded to the team in 2017.
The Blues claimed the Cup on June 12, when they beat the host Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 7 of the NHL final.
Schenn is the only person who will spend his time with the Cup in Saskatoon this season. Last August, Washington Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson celebrated his championship victory by bringing Lord Stanley’s mug to Saskatoon and Humboldt.
Two other members of the Blues from Saskatchewan, Tyler Bozak and Jaden Schwartz, will bring the iconic trophy to the Legislative Building in Regina on Saturday. Festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will be hosted by Premier Scott Moe.
