The RCMP has charged Greg Fertuck with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his estranged wife, Sheree Fertuck.
Greg Fertuck also was charged with one count of offering an indignity to human remains. He’s to make his first court appearance Wednesday in Saskatoon Provincial Court.
It has been nearly 3 1/2 years since Sheree Fertuck disappeared.
On Tuesday, RCMP Supt. Derek Williams addressed the time between the crime and the arrest.
“Any homicide investigation is complex at its nature and especially historical cases, they do take a long time to collect the evidence necessary to lay a charge, and after this period of time we were successful in laying a charge,” Williams said during a media conference in Regina.
Shortly after Sheree’s disappearance, it came out in court documents that Greg was a suspect in the case. He was arrested Monday on the outskirts of Saskatoon.
Greg has been charged, but Williams said a body hasn’t been found.
“Although it’s unusual, there have been successful prosecutions before without a body being found,” he said. “In this case, Crowns felt we have enough evidence to prosecute for first-degree murder, and we’ll continue to search for Sheree’s body to bring that closure to the family.”
Williams said the RCMP told Sheree’s family about the arrest, and he said they were happy that charges have been laid.
“Obviously it still remains tragic,” he said, “and at the end of the day we still need to find Sheree’s body to bring that closure to the family.”
Sheree Fertuck, a 51-year-old mother of three, was last seen on Dec. 7, 2015 when she left her family farm near Kenaston in a gravel truck.
The truck was found abandoned at a nearby gravel pit, with Fertuck’s keys, jacket and cellphone still inside.
