Just in time for summer vacation, the Nutrien Wonderhub children’s museum is opening June 28.
It’s located at the former Mendel Art Gallery at 950 Spadina Crescent East.
Amanda McReynolds Doran, the museum’s executive director, said the museum’s focus is a mix of fun and learning.
“There’s so much that kids are capable of that we as parents and caregivers don’t know. So, this is a place that unlocks that hidden potential, and lets them explore and discover who they might be,” she told 650 CKOM.
Kids will be allowed to touch and interact with everything at the museum. Displays include a climbing area, a miniature town, places to make art and music, a simulated potash mine and more.
There will also be interactive educational programs held regularly.
McReynolds Doran said they can offer a different type of learning from the classroom.
“There’s no educational outcome, or no fact, or no tidbit we want them to walk away with,” she said.
“What we want them to do is follow their own curiosity, touch everything, explore everything, try everything and maybe discover something they didn’t know about themselves.”
McReynolds Doran said the museum has another responsibility. She thinks it’s important to respect the legacy of the Mendel Art Gallery.
“It’s a big responsibility to have been the tenant of choice for this place, and we take that very seriously.”
She said they consulted with parents, teachers, members of the Mendel family and Indigenous elders to get community feedback on the contents of the museum.
Nutrien Wonderhub will be open every day except Monday and holidays.
