Solar-powered homes are coming to the Saskatoon market next year.
Arbutus Properties said the next batch of homes in its Meadows development will be equipped with rooftop panels that can produce their own electricity with any surplus being sold back to the provincial grid.
The renewable-energy homes will be located in the Rosewood area. Paul Buitenhuis, the vice-president of development for Arbutus Properties, said it will be the first initiative of its kind in Saskatoon.
“Saskatchewan is one of the best places in the country to have solar-powered (homes). It’s got more sunshine than most,” said Buitenhuis.
“Home building can’t be done the way it has been done for years. It’s all electrical power. It’s not sustainable.”
The environmentally friendly homes will be delivered with a two-kilowatt solar panel system with the option of expansion.
Buitenhuis said the 119 homes set to hit the market in 2020 will be a testing ground for Arbutus’ proposed Solair development east of Rosewood.
The development before city council has been billed by the company as the largest sustainable community in Canada.
