The Saskatoon Shrine Club is marking its 100th year on Saturday.
Shriner Noble Bob Keep told 650 CKOM’s Brent Loucks about the club’s work and history on Tuesday, noting the Shrine Club may be the oldest in North America.
Keep said he’s very proud of Shriners International’s 23 non-profit children’s hospitals, but he thinks the Montreal location is the most impressive.
“There’s nothing like it; I’ve never seen a hospital like it in my life,” he told Loucks. “But we’ve got some fantastic hospitals in the U.S. as well.”
Keep said more than 100 Saskatchewan children are treated in Shriner hospitals.
Beyond the Shriners’ charity work, they also focus on promoting family values and organizing recreational activities.
The celebration on Saturday will start with a parade downtown in the morning and wrap up with a formal dinner party at the Western Development Museum.
Shriners are well-known for their history of running circuses, as well as for wearing their iconic red fez hats.
