Saskatoon police are hoping to avoid a repeat of the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays championship celebrations.
In a media release Monday afternoon, police said they will be in full force for tonight’s NBA Finals Game 5 between the Toronto Raptors and the Golden State Warriors.
“(Saskatoon Police Service) will have additional resources throughout the night to ensure that patrons, fans and the general public are provided with a safe and secure environment to enjoy a potential NBA championship win,” the release said.
In 1993, police had to be outfitted in riot gear to control unruly crowds on Eighth Street following the Blue Jays’ World Series win.
Saskatoon police also wanted to remind businesses and patrons “about the potential for civil disobedience when you have a mix of large crowds and alcohol.”
Police are expected to be at a variety of venues throughout the city before, during and after the game.
Regina police not worried about celebrations
Regina Police Service spokesman Les Parker said officers in the Queen City will be ready for whatever happens.
“We had a Rider win in the city (in the 2013 Grey Cup on Taylor Field) and I don’t think you can get bigger than that,” Parker said with a laugh. “We were so impressed with how well (fans) celebrated.”
After the Roughriders defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 45-23 in the 2013 CFL final, Saskatchewan fans celebrated on the streets of Regina. There weren’t any serious incidents during that revelry.
The viewing party in Regina on Monday is to be held at Mosaic Stadium.
