The Lawson Heights Mall in Saskatoon is showing its love for bees in the community with the unveiling of a mural Friday.
The painting located in the corridor between the mall and Safeway was part of a project to commemorate World Bee Day on Monday.
Tammy Krueckl with the Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming (SCYAP) coordinated the painting.
“The mall had a really great idea to incorporate some produce and flowers. The idea of putting bees in there sort of grew organtically,” Krueckl said, adding finishing touches on the painting will be made this week.
The mall is the first in the city to install bee hotels and flowers on its roof.
“We want to do our part in increasing pollination and the bee population in Saskatoon, said the mall’s marketing director Shauna Morrison.
“Sustainability is a key pillar here at Lawson Heights Mall.”
May 20 was designated by the United Nations as World Bee Day to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.
