The Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA) has been tasked with developing the city’s first economic growth strategy.
Mayor Charlie Clark announced Growing YXE to a business audience at the SREDA Forum on Thursday at TCU Place.
Clark said over the last decade, the city has been setting the pace for economic activity in Saskatchewan. He pointed to the creation of 33,000 jobs, representing 62 per cent of all job growth in the province.
Clark said even with the success Saskatoon has seen, it has become apparent to him that the city has lacked a clear vision on how to better position itself for the future.
“As I had those conversations with people, it was becoming clear we didn’t have a coherent plan,” Clark told the crowd.
Clark says a steering committee, led by SREDA, has already held a number of roundtables with industry leaders. Those consultations along with a public survey will be concluded in May.
The feedback that is gathered will then be used to develop the strategy, which is expected to be released in the fall.
“We have a tremendous amount to offer the world: our talent, quality of life, diversified resources. We want young people to look around our city and say,’ There is a future here for me,’ ” Clark said in a release.
