A drug bust in Meacham has led to nearly three kilograms of crystal meth being kept off of Saskatoon streets.
The RCMP announced the bust on Monday, following a four-month investigation that led police to a home in Meacham, located about 70 kilometres east of Saskatoon. Two people were pulled over after leaving a home in the village on Thursday.
“Anytime when we can take the drugs off the streets, that affects criminals’ ability to sell drugs to end users, so I suspect that would create a bit of a supply problem in the near future,” Sgt. Jason Kerr said at a media conference.
Police seized individually packaged methamphetamine, four cellphones and two large packages of methamphetamine from the traffic stop. The car was also seized, as it was determined to be stolen.
In total, 2.7 kilograms were nabbed by officers.
“I would say it’s our most significant seizure here in Saskatoon in 2019, particularly in terms of meth, which is a dangerous drug … so it’s an important seizure in that respect,” said Kerr, who noted the seizure equates to 2,700 doses for a user purchasing meth in one-gram amounts.
Police searched the home in Meacham and found almost 15 grams of cocaine, $10,100 in cash, a loaded .357 magnum revolver, a .22-calibre revolver and a crossbow.
The investigation led officers to a business in the 600 block of Avenue N South, where two trucks, an SUV and two passenger cars were recovered, as well as false sale sheets and tools used for breaking into vehicles.
The man and woman arrested on Thursday recently moved from Saskatoon to Meacham, a town of fewer than 100 people.
James William Mallett, 58, and 45-year-old Jena Marie Beamish face numerous possession, drug trafficking, firearms and money-laundering charges.
Both are to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court this week.
