Nearly a decade after seeing a documentary on the Dempster Highway, Dennis McKee finally got to drive it himself.
The Saskatoon man and a group of friends spent 12 days on the road trip of a lifetime, which also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the highway. The road runs from Dawson City, Yukon to Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
“On March 2, the three of us set out,” McKee said. “On the first day, we drove to Prince George, which is about 950 kilometres.”
The trip took them through Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia before they arrived at the start of the Dempster Highway.
“It’s just the neatest darn place ever,” McKee told 650 CKOM. “We crossed the continental divide, we crossed the Arctic Circle … Dawson City is the neatest little town.”
Aside from driving across the nearly 740km-long highway, McKee said the rest of the trip was just surprises.
The highlights of the trip included seeing the rugged wilderness of the Yukon, hunting small game and checking out some of the small communities along the way.
McKee is already planning his next road trip.
“We’re thinking maybe the Athabasca sand dunes or running up to Stony Plains,” he said.
