Gregory Burke is resigning as executive director and CEO of the Remai Modern Art Gallery, choosing to return home to New Zealand.
In a release Wednesday afternoon, the Remai Modern said Burke was appointed the director of the Auckland Art Gallery.
“It’s been an enormous privilege to work with visionary donors, an ambitious and committed board, and the people of Saskatoon to establish Remai Modern,” Burke said in the release.
“I have been thrilled by the response from the local community, as well as national and international visitors, artists and collaborators. Saskatoon and Remai Modern will always have a special place in my heart.”
The Kiwi came to Saskatoon in 2013, taking over as the head of the Mendel Art Gallery.
He led the art community through the long transition and move into the Remai Modern building downtown.
Burke withstood close scrutiny by city councillors in creating expectations and budgets for the new gallery, and eventually led the Remai Modern to a better-than-expected first year.
The gallery attracted more than 450,000 visitors, when just 190,000 were expected.
It was also cited as a reason the New York Times named Saskatoon as one of it’s 52 places to go in 2018.
In an interview with 650 CKOM Thursday, Burke said he didn’t foresee such a successful first year.
“You dream about these things, but I didn’t expect it,” he said.
“I was very nervous, anxious in fact, in the years leading up to the opening that we would be able to make it work.”
Burke is expected to remain in Saskatoon until March, assisting in a transition to a temporary CEO.
The gallery said the board was planning an interim leadership until a new, permanent CEO can be installed.
Burke said whoever takes over will be inheriting a strong structure.
“I can say with my hand on my heart that I’m leaving the gallery in a very, very solid position,” he said.
While he’s moving to a country halfway around the world in March, Burke assures the Bridge City hasn’t seen the last of him.
“Saskatoon is really as much my home as Auckland is, and I’ll be back often.”
