The Sutherland Bar — affectionately known as The Scuzz by many who have come through the doors over the years — is shutting down.
This will be the bar’s last weekend in business, with Halloween events Friday and Saturday night and an industry and staff night Sunday.
General Manager Aurielle Bleau said she’s enjoyed swapping stories over the last few weeks with people coming in for one last drink.
“Every day I have someone coming in. And it’s always something positive, they’re always like: ‘ I met my best friend here,’ or ‘I met my husband or wife.'”
Bleau said she’ll enjoy her last weekend, but expects she’ll find it bittersweet when she completes the last of her shifts closing down the bar through the middle of the week.
“This bar has been a part of the community for over 100 years and I can’t believe that it’s not going to be here anymore.”
The plan to close the bar was made public over the summer, when it was announced that nearby insurance broker Rayner Agencies Ltd. was purchasing the building and would convert both the bar and accompanying hotel into office space.
