Saskatoon police have made an arrest in the case of a missing RCMP-issue pistol, but the gun itself is unaccounted for.
Police reported that an unmarked RCMP vehicle was broken into on the morning of Aug. 8, while parked overnight at a Saskatoon hotel.
A Smith & Wesson handgun was allegedly stolen from inside.
Saskatoon police issued a media release Wednesday saying a 60-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the case.
Members of the police bike unit reportedly spotted the man around 5:30 p.m. Monday and noted he matched a suspect description from the theft.
The man was reportedly found with drugs on him, but no gun.
Following the arrest, police searched homes on the 500 block of Avenue F South and the 100 block of Avenue T South, but neither of those searches turned up the missing pistol.
The suspect is charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance. He was released from custody on conditions and is due to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Sept. 4.
Police said they are continuing the search for the missing gun, which is described as a silver-coloured Smith & Wesson model 5946 handgun with a black grip and an RCMP image etched on the side.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Saskatoon police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
