Saskatchewan racing fans will be gathering in Saskatoon tonight as the NASCAR Pinty’s Series rolls into Wyant Group Raceway on Wednesday night.
Popular Canadian stock car drivers D.J. Kennington and Alex Tagliani will be among the big names taking part in the twin 125-lap feature races at the oval track nestled between Highways 11 and 12 just north of the city.
The biggest race night of the season will pay tribute to the Humboldt Broncos in a big way.
Of the 18 cars taking part in the races, 16 have been chosen to carry the names of the players and team staff who died in the April 6 crash near Tisdale.
Prince Albert’s Shantel Kalika — the first Sask. woman to race in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series — will have Dayna Brons’ name on the back windshield of her #43 car all night.
“Obviously she really loved sports, I love sports, and we’re both females in male-dominated sports,” Kalika told Brent Loucks.
“I’m really excited to be able to have that and pay tribute to her life.”
In addition to carrying Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan’s name on the back windshield, B.C.’s “Racin'” Jason White will also race a special #28 car with a full Humboldt Broncos tribute wrap on his vehicle.
“Honoured to drive this #humboldtstrong tribute car this week,” White wrote on Instagram. “Hotrod looks amazing!”
Alex Tagliani, a former IndyCar star, is carrying Logan Hunter’s name. He has plans to meet with the family, and said it’s going to give him extra motivation to bring in the checker flag.
“Personally I’d like to win for the cause, and carry his helmet,” he said.
