The NHL awards in Las Vegas Wednesday night became a reunion of sorts for the survivors of the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy.
Ten of the 13 people injured in the April 6 crash gathered on stage in their Humboldt Broncos jerseys.
After a video about the crash and their recovery played the Broncos fallen coach, Darcy Haugen became the first recipient of the Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award.
His widow Christina Haugan accepted the award on his behalf.
“Darcy used the game of hockey, which he was so passionate about, as a tool to help shape young lives.” She told the crowd at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
Following Christina’s acceptance speech a video played a tribute video to the 16 people killed in the highway collision to the song “Humbolt Strong (Leave a Stick by the Door)” as the survivors on stage embraced her.
