A steep discount on Nutella hazelnut spread has caused Black Friday-style brawls in some supermarkets in France.
French grocery chain Intermarché slashed the price of 950-gram containers of the popular condiment by 70 per cent starting Thursday.
The sale was meant to last until Saturday, but many stores saw their stocks snapped up in minutes.
Police had to be called to some stores as customers pushed, shoved and knocked over displays. At least one grocery store employee was reportedly punched in the face, while there were reports of an elderly woman being hit in the head with a box at a different location.
Ferrero, the company that makes Nutella, quickly took to social media to distance itself from the situation, saying Intermarché was responsible for the promotion.
