Saskatoon police have charged a 28-year-old man with sexual assault after responding to a report of a break-in in the Holiday Park neighbourhood.
A police canine unit was sent to a home on the 1400 block of Avenue M South just before 1 a.m. Monday.
A 78-year-old woman reported that she’d woken up to find a strange man in her bed. She told police the man tried to sexually assault her, but he left after she managed to fight him off.
The police dog was able to find the suspect nearby. Police said the man refused to comply with the officer and tried to run away. The officer reportedly released his dog, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment of dog bites. Police reported that the suspect spat on the officers guarding him while he was in hospital. Once his wounds were taken care of, he was taken to the police holding cells.
Police have charged the man with sexual assault, unlawful confinement, break-and-enter, and assaulting a police officer.
The 78-year-old woman was reportedly treated by paramedics at the scene for a minor injury.
