Classic cars take over Saskatoon for Rock 102 Show and Shine

Classic cars took over the streets of downtown Saskatoon Sunday for the 35th annual Rock 102 Show and Shine.

Over 900 cars filled 10 blocks, while 50,000 people roamed the streets to take a look.

“Saskatoon has a crazy car culture,” said Rock 102 Host Derek Watson. “I’ve lived in a number of places across the country and there isn’t a city that loves their cars more than this city.”

Some of the cars that caught people’s eyes were the regular staples like Ford Mustangs and Corvettes, but also classics like a 1926 Chrysler Roadster.

“It was restored in the late 80’s and it’s a lot of fun,” said Shawn Silverthorn, who’s 70-year-old Grandpa, Larry Fletcher bought the car when he was 16-years-old.

“When I was a kid I loved riding in the rumble seat.”

Silverthorn said it’s not an easy car to drive.

“There’s no power steering or power brakes,” he said. “You have to work it pretty hard to keep her going, but she’ll do 70 mph.”

Doug Simpson with the Coachmen’s Car Club brought out his 1962 Chevy II.

“It’s a lot of fun to drive,” he said. “I love being in a car club because I like meeting people who have similar interests as me.”

Simpson said the Coachmen’s Car Club do about 20 car shows every year.

“It’s fun being around cars and raising money for charity.”
