Claims are beginning to roll in at SGI following Monday night’s storm in Saskatoon.
By late Tuesday afternoon, the company reported getting about 68 property claims with 50 of those for hail damage and 18 for water-related damages.
The company also got 20 auto claims, with most of those coming from vehicles in the Confederation area, which was one of the worst-hit parts of the city.
A spokesperson for SGI pointed out in an email that while SGI is the insurer for all the province’s vehicles, the company is only one of many handling property insurance, so the number of claims for houses would likely already be higher.
SGI has seen an average of 8,200 auto hail claims each year between 2012 and 2016, with a high of 12,000 claims in 2013.
The company reported an average of 2,300 property claims over the same 2012-2016 period, with a high of 3,100 in 2016.
While the company is still waiting for all claims from this week’s hailstorm to come in, it reported getting a total of 6,378 auto claims and 932 general claims following the hail storm that hit Saskatoon on June 2.
