Drivers are still getting caught speeding through construction zones around two major road work projects near Saskatoon.
People travelling along Highway 5 at McOrmond Road and Highway 16 at Boychuck Drive may be used to seeing orange signage, but some still aren’t heeding the mandated 60 km/h limit.
“Numerous drivers are travelling way too fast with total disregard for the safety of the people working near the roadways,” police said in a release Wednesday.
Saskatoon police said 23 drivers were given speeding tickets during a two-hour period on Tuesday.
Officers were back in the area for a similar length of time Wednesday. They clocked 32 people going more than 60 km/h.
The worst offenders were caught travelling in the 90 km/h range, the highest being 97 km/h on Tuesday. The fine for driving 37 km/h over the limit is $512.
When the area is not designated a construction zone, the speed limit is 90 km/h.
Drivers must slow to 60 km/h in all orange zones, even if no workers are present. Those caught speeding face triple the usual fine if they’re caught in Saskatchewan.
On May 11, a spokesperson with the city said part of the reason speed limits remain the same – whether workers are present or not – is to get drivers accustomed to the change.
