People stranded in Moosomin as Highway 1 remains closed at Sask.-Man. border

Poor road conditions are keeping people stranded around the border of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Highway 1 remained closed from the border to Headingley, Man., Wednesday morning.

That meant people travelling through Moosomin, Sask., were left stranded.

“There’s a lot of people that are stranded in Moosomin so our hotel is definitely sold out,” said Tamara Arnold, a front desk clerk at the Canalta Hotel.

“We sold out last night and then today we’ve had like five or six people already come in off the highway.”

Arnold said some people were turned away last night – as did two other hotels in the area she said were booked solid. She added many people extended their stay an extra night as the highway remains closed.

“Even if it does (open), there’s probably 150 semis here that are going to try and get out quicker than the rest of the people.”

“There’s definitely a lot of cars stuck in ditches, in the middle of roads and semis are just lined up – like Co-op is full of semi-trucks,” Arnold said. “There’s not any more room for them to go.

From the Manitoba border to Whitewood, Sask., there are icy, slippery sections, snow drifts, swirling snow, drifting snow and reduced visibility.
