Sabra brand hummus recalled due to listeria concerns

Sabra Canada Inc. has voluntarily recalled an extensive list of its hummus products due to Listeria concerns.

People should check their fridges for flavoured and classic versions of hummus dip in different sizes with best before dates up to and including Jan. 23, 2017. The affected products should be thrown out immediately.

Sabra said the product is being recalled “out of an abundance of caution” after Listeria was found in its manufacturing facility. It has not been found in a finished product, nor has anyone been reported sick.

“We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants. We are taking action because consumer safety is a top priority,” Sabra said on its website Sunday.

Listeria can cause serious – sometimes fatal – infections in people with weakened immune systems, like young children and the elderly. In healthy people, it can cause high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can also call miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Other Sabra products – including its organic hummus, salsa, guacamole and Greek yogurt dips – are not affected by this recall.
