Please, please, please, let this year’s Grey Cup not be a disaster.
There are few better examples of Canadiana than the Grey Cup. An opportunity for people from across the country congregate to party, wave flags and watch a football game.
But whenever the CFL championship moves to Toronto, there’s a possibility it could be a dud. In Canada’s biggest market, where they fawn full time over the Maple Leafs, swoon whenever the Blue Jays make the playoffs and are learning to jump on the Raptors’ bandwagon, the Canadian Football League is almost a non-entity.
The Toronto Argonauts’ bad season didn’t help matters. In 2012, the last time the Grey Cup was in Toronto, the hometown Argonauts were in the game. And they won. This year features teams from distant markets. Ticket prices were initially so exorbitant that virtually nobody bought them, so the prices were rolled back.
