Province takes back $3M from Skip the Dishes

A big cheque cut for the Saskatchewan-born company Skip the Dishes has fluttered away after the province said the company didn’t meet conditions in the deal.

Previously, the government defended its decision to give the company a $3 million grant for expansion. Deals under the Job Fund Agreement, which the province normally would enter into, have a cap at $250,000 per company, but this deal was done outside the program.

Some eyebrows were raised in April when it came out the online food delivery tool was getting millions from the government for more employees.

Economy Minister Jeremy Harrison explained why the money was taken back.

“The conditions in that contract had not been met by Skip the Dishes, and therefore … there was a cheque that was advanced, that cheque was not cashed – we put a stop payment on that cheque.”

Harrison said conditions that weren’t met included the acquisition of space and hiring of employees.

Skip the Dishes is an online portal that connects customers to restaurants and delivery companies.
