'I feel bad for the U.S.:' People in Regina watch as Donald Trump wins presidential election

After a historic campaign, Americans have elected a new president and people in Regina watched as history was made.

Donald Trump stunned the world when he won the Republican leadership and he continued to ride that wave of support to become the 45th president of the United States Tuesday night.

Hillary Clinton supporters in Regina were confident Trump’s early lead wouldn’t last.

Harvey Donaldson moved to Regina from Florida and voted in the election as an absentee voter.

“I’m feeling a lot better than I was a little while ago, I can see it’s going to be a good night for Hillary Clinton,” Donaldson said early in the election.

Karen Morley, from Atlanta, was watching the election from her Regina home and remained confident Clinton would pull off the victory.

It wasn’t just people watching the elections in their homes, as students at the University of Regina went to The Owl, the campus bar, to watch the election.

Battle Kenney, a mathematics major at the U of R, is from Nashville, Tenn. He said the election was going how he thought it would.

“I’m pretty excited right now. This was my first election voting, it’s really cool to watch.”

Garrett Bates was also at The Owl watching and was excited to see Trump get out to an early lead.

“I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily a Trump supporter, I would just say that I think he is going to do less war-mongery things than Clinton is,” Bates said.

“Like that no-fly zone over Syria, that seems like a very bad idea and I don’t think Trump supports that like Clinton does.”

It was a close race in many states, but thanks to a strong showing in many key states, Trump was able to win the presidency.

“I feel bad for the U.S. I feel bad for everybody who lives there,” Donaldson said as Trump inched closer to the presidency.

“As far as I’m concerned, it just made the U.S. the laughing stock of the world.”
