Syrian refugees celebrated at legislature

Amid a sea of green and yellow Saskatchewan flags, the smiling faces of Syrian refugees could be seen at the legislature Wednesday.

The government held a party to celebrate those who now call the province home.

Just ten months ago, 17-year-old Alaa Alshatter was living in a camp in Jordan.

Now he is thriving in grade 11 at Balfour Collegiate in Regina, focusing on his studies and joking that his English still needs work.

“I want to commit my study and do this in Canada and here and I am so thankful for everyone that’s helped me on the school, for Canada, I am so proud I’m here,” Alshatter said.

Calling the camp, and his life before that, “scary,” Alshatter can’t believe how friendly everyone has been since arriving in Regina.

“So good. Everyone helps me … they are so amazing.”

There are still some adjustments to make to life in Canada and Alshatter said he wants to stay here. 

Although, he would change one thing – and it isn’t the winters.

“I don’t like football. I would be sure on this one, I don’t like football, I am a soccer person,” Alshatter laughed.

The premier spoke with many of the families at the reception with the help of an interpreter.
