The Regina Pats’ are making a bid for the 2018 Memorial Cup, but they may have hit a small roadblock.
The Regina Pats ownership group is currently in negotiations for a new lease with Regina Exhibition Associated Ltd. (REAL), which operates the facility.
The junior hockey championship will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2018, the same year the Pats will celebrate their own centennial.
Mayor Michael Fougere believes both sides will be able to come to an agreement.
“If we all keep our mind on the big picture, which is to get the Memorial Cup here, that should focus attention by both the Pats ownership and REAL, which operates on behalf of the City of Regina, to come to an agreement,” Fougere said on the 980 CJME Morning Show.
This isn’t the first time Pats ownership has run into a problem with the lease, with the last owners of the team also having issues renewing the lease.
The Pats last hosted the tournament in 2001.
