Pipeline supporters rallied together in White City Monday to show their support for the industry.
The rally was organized by White City Mayor Bruce Evans.
“The need exists to stand up for our resource industries,” Evans said.
The speakers, which included Minister Jeremy Harrison and Conservative leadership nominee Andrew Scheer, spoke about how important pipelines are to the economy and jobs, as well as the benefits to getting oil from within the country rather than importing from foreign countries. Speakers also felt there too much focus is on citizens who are against the oil industry and not enough on those who support it.
“I would like to see the side of the story that represents Canadians who support the sector told,” Scheer said.
Courtland Klein is an executive member of United Steel Workers 5890 and said it’s important that projects such as Energy East and Trans Mountain get approved so nearly 1000 jobs aren’t lost.
In White City, there are five pipelines that run through the community and according to Evans, one of them is in need of a replacement pipe.
