Craig Anderson’s weekend had a highlight. But it doesn’t have a happy ending, yet.
There’s a long, uncertain road ahead for Anderson, the Ottawa Senators’ goaltender, and his wife Nicholle, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Anderson left the Senators for a few days to be with his wife after her diagnosis. Upon rejoining the team he made 37 saves for his second straight shutout of the NHL season, blanking the Edmonton Oilers 2-0. Teammates, media and fans raved about his amazing and emotionally draining performance. It was a public display. It made everyone feel great.
But there’s so much more ahead. Cancer treatments await. There will be a physical and emotional toll on their family. The hockey world will say it’s supporting Anderson, but there’s only so much that can be done away from the day-to-day tribulations of families dealing personally with cancer. Let’s hope they have lots of wonderful highlights ahead.
