No recount in tight Ward 4 election

There will be no recount in Regina’s Ward 4 following the municipal election Oct. 26th.

Just 59 votes separated winner Lori Bresciani and incumbent Bryon Burnett.

Burnett confirms he will not seek a recount. He was subject to one in 2012 when he edged out Tina Beaudry-Mellor by 34 votes.

“Having gone through a recount once and being able to observe the technology that’s used, the machine themselves. I’m pretty confident that the numbers are very close, there might be one or two that the machine would identify as problematic,” Burnett explained.

“Fifty some is too big of a gap and I think it is just fair to accept the numbers as is and let Lori move forward in her role.”

Despite being a councillor for only one term, Burnett will look back fondly on his time on council dealing with high-profile, and at times contentious issues, like the building of Mosaic Stadium, the city pension plan, debt and the use of public-private partnerships (P3s).

“I think we had one of the best teams in terms of councillors. I think all of council and the mayor worked extremely well under kind-of fairly, high-pressure, demanding times.”

Beaudry-Mellor is now social services minister, so what does the future hold for Burnett?

“I always feel you are being prepared for something bigger and better, so now I am just getting excited for what that bigger and better might be.”
