Michael Fougere leading in polls

A new poll is calling Michael Fougere the winner in the upcoming Regina mayoral race.

Mainstreet/Postmedia said Fougere has the support of 73 per cent of decided and leaning voters.

“It looks like Michael Fougere is headed towards a landslide win,” said David Valentin, executive vice-president of Mainstreet Research.

“The only question at this point is exactly how much he will win by.”

Tony Fiacco is predicted to come in second place. He has nine per cent of decided and leaning voters.

Fourty-six per cent of Regina voters are undecided.

There has been a noticeable absence of lawn signs, campaign events and announcements .

Valentin believes many people may be unaware the election is taking place at all.

“It’s very difficult to calculate how many voters — and which ones, might decide to stay home due to complacency,” he said.

The poll also asked residents what level of government affects them most. Thirty-four per cent said municipal government while 30 per cent said provincial.

Despite that, only 13 per cent are paying the most attention to municipal affairs.

The survey questioned 603 Regina residents by phone Oct. 12, 2016.

The election takes place Oct. 26.
