Haitians in Regina watch as Haiti is ravaged by Hurricane Matthew

Far from their home land, Haitians in Canada are watching the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew.

It has displaced thousands in the country, killed hundreds, and now there are growing fears of a cholera epidemic.

But Carlos Petit-Homme, who has called Regina home since the early 1990s, maintains Haitians are a resilient people.

“The people in Haiti are what keep the country going, good people, a good sense in spite of all that happens,” Petit-Homme said.

“Things will get better, even if you don’t know what happens, it will get better. You have that hope and that is what keeps the people going every day.”

Haiti was rocked by a massive earthquake in 2010 and the country was still rebuilding from that disaster.

Petit-Homme has friends who were left homeless as a result of the hurricane but he contended many others family members were lucky.

He said all he can do is just stay in touch with people, watch from afar and send money to help where possible.
