The anti-Trudeau texts started pouring in during the Green Zone.
We were discussing the Saskatchewan Roughriders practising on the lawn at Parliament Hill, where they met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, played catch with him and posed for pictures. We thought it was innocuous and pretty cool. Many of our listeners disagreed.
One texter said it was a “ridiculous” scene. Others sent nasty remarks about the prime minister, claiming they could no longer support the Riders financially. And one said his wife and kids would never again cheer for the Riders.
Anti-Trudeau sentiment has festered in Saskatchewan since the late 1960s, when Justin’s father alienated the province as Canada’s eastern-leaning prime minister.
Regardless of your political slant or your nationality, it should be an honour to meet the prime minister. He was elected through Canada’s electoral process. Roughriders coaches and players, American and Canadians, appreciated that. It’s really too bad some of their fans don’t think the same way.
