With no guarantee of a pay off, you have to admire the confidence of Toronto Argonauts’ management. At five and nine, the Argos are a long shot to make the playoffs, but they do have a chance.
That being said the team released three play making receivers earlier this week. Kevin Elliot is in his second year in the CFL with nearly 1,000 yards in receiving. Second year pass catcher Tori Gurley has close to 1,300 yards in his career. Vidal Hazelton is averaging 13.4 yards per catch in his CFL career.
The team is banking on Canadian rookies Brian Jones and Llevi Noel to fill the void. The players who were released may have underachieved in the eyes of GM Jim Barker and head coach Scott Milanovich. There may have even been an issue in the dressing room. We will never know.
Gurley is now a Winnipeg Blue Bomber. Hazelton, a Ti-Cat in Hamilton. It’s bold for the Argos to release these players. In a nine team team league those same play makers will be extremely motivated to perform when the next time the Argos are the opponents.
