Some suggest it’s crazy for an NHL team to name a 19 year old player as a team captain. On Wednesday, the Oilers announced that Connor McDavid would wear the “C” for the 2016-17 season. He is the youngest player to ever captain a team in league history. Many believe it’s too soon, however I believe this is a good move.
Since being selected first overall in the 2015 draft, the Oilers have built this franchise around this superstar. Owner Daryl Katz has already consulted with McDavid on a number of topics, and in return, McDavid has proven that he can play at this level. Let’s remember he did put up 48 points in 45 games last season, despite missing some time with a broken collarbone.
The youth movement has been on in Edmonton for some time. Yes, this is a team that has mismanaged its young stars in recent years, but not this time.
The Oilers might as well empower a young star to be team leader.
