Forgive me for being Regina-centric. I know Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Yorkton and other Saskatchewan cities have sports halls of fame, but I’ve been involved with the Regina Sports Hall of Fame for 16 years.
Our induction ceremony is tonight at Evraz Place. And I’m sure I’m going to cry again during the acceptance speeches. It happens every year.
When we inducted hockey player Doug Wickenheiser, his twin girls spoke about the memories of their late father. I bawled.
One year Les Cuthbert, a badminton player, was inducted. His son told the audience they never knew his father was such an accomplished athlete because he had stopped playing competitive badminton when he started raising a family, and he never spoke of his victories.
Wilma Downing’s affection for her high-school student/athletes was overpowering.
My father, Lorne Davis, was among the inaugural inductees. So I had a good reason to cry right from the start.
This year’s inductees are Greg Fieger, Glen Fekula, Karen Thull, Leah Holliday and Jennifer Tangjerd, the 1993-94 Regina Pat Canadians and the Luther Invitational Tournament. Sniff.
